By: Joan Tupponce, Joan Tupponce & Associates, Inc. Paul Catucci enjoys discovering a person?s potential.

"We call it liberating the potential of people in all levels of the organization," he says.

As Administrative Director for Human Resources at Bon Secours Richmond Health System, Catucci provides the organization with strategic direction in regard to human resources.

"We are the visible human resources leader within the organization," he explains. "We partner with senior leadership teams. We work with organizational development, change management and human behavior as well as HR services such as employee relations." Catucci helps implement the strategic plan for the organization as it relates to the human resources function.

"It?s more of a leadership role, which is exciting," he explains. "It?s more of a business partner role."

Throughout the week, Catucci meets with leadership teams from all areas of the hospital.

"That sets the map for what we do during the week," he explains. "I also have a direct leadership role in patient and employee satisfaction as well as business operation."

Catucci interacts with employees as well as key leaders.

"I go onto the floors and talk with leadership and the staff," he says. "I have a peer in my office who works with onboarding (employment). She is responsible for advertising, interviewing and screening applicants."

The job is not a 9-to-5 position. Hospitals are open to serve the community 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. "Typically it is a Monday through Friday job," Catucci says. "There are occasions, however, when we do come in on the weekend." Anyone interested in the field must have at least a bachelor?s degree. Human resources professional certifications and/or designations and certification in quality training ? training in systems that help improve quality and systems ? are also preferred.

The job also requires a background in strategic planning and organizational development as well as experience in employee relations.

"Any person interested in the field needs to have business acumen for business development along with education and experience in leadership development and healthcare," Catucci says. "You need to have experience at this level with complex, highly matrixed hospital systems as well as change management."

Administrative directors also need problem-solving skills as well as the ability to multi-task and interact with others. "You need the capability of developing superb relationships with nurses and other healthcare providers," Catucci says, noting that negotiating skills are a plus.

Positions in the field can be found in hospitals and other industries.

"If you work in another industry, you should have knowledge of the business side of that industry," Catucci says. Starting salaries in the field vary depending on location and can range from $50,000 to $150,000. "I?ve been doing this for 15 years," Catucci says. "I really enjoy working with people and helping them to develop."
