One driver and one pedestrian died in separate accidents in Virginia this week, Virginia State Police said.
Carlos Mendell Debrill II, 70, of Richmond, died Monday at the scene of a single-car crash in Bath County, state police said. He was traveling east on Route 39 about 2 miles west of Route 630 when his car went off the right side of the road. He overcorrected and ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree. He was wearing a seat belt, according to state police.
Daniel Peinado, 17, of Virginia Beach died yesterday at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital from injuries suffered when he was struck by a vehicle after stepping onto General Booth Boulevard in Virginia Beach on Tuesday, state police said. The crash occurred about 20 feet south of the Gallery Avenue intersection.
Virginia's 2008 highway death toll is 439, compared with 540 at the same time last year. Peinado's death was the state's 45th pedestrian fatality of the year, up from 39 last year.
