A state outreach effort is providing health insurance to a record number of Virginia children and pregnant women who otherwise would not have health coverage.
Gov. Timothy M. Kaine said yesterday that he has made it a priority to increase enrollment in FAMIS -- or Family Access to Medical Insurance Security Plan.
As a result, 450,000 Virginia children are now covered.
Marketing and outreach initiatives in Spanish and English have brought more than 24,000 children into the program during Kaine's term.
Pregnant women in the program total 17,500.
The program provides access to critical prenatal and postpartum care.
